Three Key Water Softener Maintenance And Repair Tips

by Johnny Jennings

A water softener is undoubtedly the best way to reduce the many problems associated with hard water. Yet unless you keep your softener in good working order, it may not be able to deliver the results you desire. If you would like to learn more about what it takes to keep this incredibly useful appliance working at peak capacity, keep reading. This article will outline three helpful repair and maintenance tips.

Don't use rock salt.

All water softeners rely on sodium salts to accomplish the task of softening hard water. Therefore it should not be surprising that the principal expense associated with a water softener is salt. In order to keep costs at a minimum, many homeowners purchase rock salt—the cheapest possible option—as their sodium source. Unfortunately, rock salt contains a larger amount of impurities, which can cause trouble as time goes on.

Generally what happens is that these impurities accumulate inside of the brine tank, forming a hard layer of sediment. Such sediment will lead to the formation of clogs in such delicate internal components as the control valve and the injector. Repairing such clogs can be a costly endeavor—one that it is best to avoid altogether by only stocking your water softener with high quality salts.

Have your brine tank cleaned out every year.

While switching to a purer form of rock salt will undoubtedly improve the performance of your water softener—while also reducing the likelihood of problems occurring—you'll still need to invest in some periodic maintenance efforts. You see, there will be a small proportion of contaminants in even the purest of salts. To keep these substances from causing problems over time, it is good to have your system thoroughly cleaned at least once a year.

Such a cleaning should involve draining the brine tank completely, and then using a wooden kitchen spoon (or other non-metal implement) to break up and salt deposits that have formed on the walls. The debris should then be vacuumed out of the tank using a shop vac. With all of the salt removed, you'll want to give the tank a thorough cleansing with soapy water, then rinse it clean.

Check your drain line's placement.

A water softener has to empty the water from its rinse tank from time to time. This involves the coordination of a special drain line, whose job is to route the water to a nearby floor drain. Often this drain line can become bumped out of place. This can lead to backups and floods. Therefore, it is wise to check every now and then to see that the drain line is still centered over the floor drain.
